“Perhaps if I revisit that moment enough times in my head I can keep my heart with them. With the laughing boys who do grand gestures with their hands and arms when they talk, and make sound effects with their mouths and do impressions when they tell stories. Maybe I can reteach my heart to be light through these simulated classes (visitations) in my head. Maybe I can learn excitement at a small thing (not just sentimentality) joy disconnected from an overall view of life or an achievement, joy because a moment allows for it. Adult joy is always girdled or underpinned. Joy, excitement and silliness which gather like a rolling wave and pick up each other and more along the way. They gather and tumble and swirl in kids until they’re made to subside. Maybe in these classes they can teach me how to start the wave in myself again?”

These are the brilliant words of @candice_baloyi who shared some thoughts with us for our July edition.

Candice Baloyi was born and raised in Johannesburg. She studied finance in Oslo and then Paris whilst writing personally and for small publications on the side. After completing her studies she moved back home and currently lives and works in Joburg.

We are so in love with this illustration by @bravokarena featured in our July edition.

Karen Bravo is a Multidisciplinary Afro Colombian artist whose work is feminine and self-explorative. She is inspired by women; especially Black women, the shape of their bodies, their hair, and their style.

Karen represents the empowerment and acceptance of Black women, their skin colour, features, and hair, showing them as magical beings that communicate themselves through dance, music, and spirituality.

As we head into the weekend, let’s take a page out of @zetzina wise book and put aside any feels of guilt over a lack of creative energy right now.

We know that for many of us the first three months

We know that for many of us the first three months of 2021 has felt more like a continuation of the hell that was last year. Between the pandemic, racial reckoning and forced isolation, it’s difficult to know where we are supposed to take a breath!

Thankfully the incredible @w_tnizzle has shared a soul-enriching morning routine that is guaranteed to help us all find that space to breathe again.🖤

“For me, morning rituals are important to ground me back in this reality (the one that allows us to share this moment – thank you for being here btw!) and to feel capable of creating the life I want every moment of every day. I usually figure out what I need to work through during my meditations and I allow myself to have an inner conversation to remind myself that I am loved and that growing pains are necessary and should be felt in order to grow.

These practices are more impactful when I do them daily no matter how I feel but I find it’s especially important to show myself this love and patience when I don’t feel like I can – because I can! I always can! The whole process of putting together this piece made me realise just how true and solid my willpower is.”
