New week, new community actions for y’all to take. 🖤

In this month’s newsletter we encouraged our readers to:

READ the third issue of the African Feminist Standpoint. In this edition there are personal essays, podcasts, blog pieces and poetry from a range of contributors all bringing themselves and their experiences to offer readers a chance to heal and prioritize self care.

FOLLOW We See You, a group of seven queer activists and artists who occupied a mansion in camps bay for a few weeks last month. Read more about this inspiring community, their aims and journey on their social media.

DONATE to the Three 2 Six Project - MOXIE will also be running a stationary drive soon to collect necessary school supplies for the project’s students.

ATTEND MOXIE’s first virtual showcase in November. More details to follow so watch this space!

Here’s this month’s editors note from @mbongomuffin 🖤

““This has been a hard year politically, professionally, personally. I find myself wanting to essay ‘I love you’ more than usual, because that is the one thing I know for sure, the one true, imperfect perfect abiding thing.” - Roxane Gay

This is an old quote but I know as you read it you, like I did, probably assumed it was about 2020. We’re all tired of the constant, ‘whew, 2020 is flaming garbage’ but here we go with another one of those editor’s notes. 2020 really has been incredibly challenging and painful for many of us.

I hope you’re able to cling on to some things that bring you joy and pleasure right now. Try making a list of your own, thinking of the things you can return to when days are heavy or you just need a break due to Zoom fatigue. Bonus points if those things cost little to no money so that if the heaviness is caused by financial situations you’re able to find something that makes you smile whenever you need it.

I’m sending so much love and tenderness your way, know that even if we don’t know each other personally I hold you in my heart and hope that this newsletter has something in it to bring some light into your Friday.

Despite all progress, global literacy challenges persist with at least 773 million adults worldwide lacking basic literacy skills today. We also know that the majority of those who are not afforded literacy skills are those from marginalised communities. The current pandemic has further highlighted this existing gap.

At MOXIE, we believe that literacy is one of the most important tools for building and nurturing more inclusive societies. This is why we have started looking at ways we can encourage and support young creatives in the refugee and asylum-seeking community in South Africa and be a part of closing this literacy gap.

One of the main things I’ve inherited from the women that came before me is fear. Because when black men needed black women to stand with them they were always there but the women of this country are always standing alone. Women have to protect themselves from their husbands and uncles in their homes. We’re fighting strangers on the streets, colleagues in the workplace, police officers, classmates, teachers, security guards, transport drivers.. and we have to do it alone.

I know you guys are tired of having this conversation, so let’s actively work towards getting rid of the problem so we don’t have to talk about it anymore.

A friend of MOXIE, @mandytait52 is writing a book and she’s looking to add your stories too!

“So my book is called, 'At What Age Does My Body Belong Just To Me' and this is basically my life story and I talk about what I went through in terms of abuse and being put in a psych ward because of my sexuality, my life story and I’m developing a FREE booklet that I can give away with the book because I want to give people something additional that has other people’s experiences and tips in the following categories.

NB: Submissions must have a strong teaching point or overall advice and positive outlook.

Each chapter will feature other people's stories and advice and tips that go along with the main chapter theme because I didn’t wanna just tell my story but not give people who might have experienced the same thing something solid or advice that they can take away from it and kind of use in their own life. So I decided to ask different experts and people who have had these experiences too, to share their opinions and advice.

Length of Submission: 750 - 1000 words

August Editor’s Note:

As we come to the end of August, I feel myself feeling incredibly heavy and in desperate need of a cry. I can imagine that there are many of us who are feeling this way. So much has been happening and when I look around at the world and what is taking place, I find myself daydreaming about standing in the middle of the street and screaming as loud as I can!

Scream for all those who are no longer able to. Scream for those who have been screaming their whole lives and are tired. Scream until someone can help me understand what the fuq is going on.

I do take solace in knowing that there are incredible women, femmes, non-binary and gender non-conforming folks on our continent who are doing the most in the face of all this hatred. I also find comfort in the content that was shared with MOXIE this month and hope it provides you with some as well.

Remember to take care of yourselves, rest, and soak up as much creative work as you can because as Angela Davis so perfectly puts it: “... it’s art that can begin to make us feel what we don’t necessarily yet understand.”
